SMC Zinc

Background:

SMC Zinc (Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP) is a source of Zinc which is an essential micronutrient for a child’s proper growth and development. SMC has introduced Strawberry and Vanilla flavored Zinc dispersible tablet in 2008 as an adjunct therapy to ORSaline (not a substitute of ORS) for prevention and treatment of diarrhea for children. SMC Zinc fights diarrhea along with Oral Saline.

Indication:

SMC Zinc is indicated for the treatment of diarrhea, especially for the children from 2 months to 5 years of age in connection with ORS.

It speeds up recovery and helps the child fight off new episodes of diarrhea in 2-3 month following treatment

Dosage:

In treatment of diarrhea, SMC Zinc should be given along with ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) in the following method:

For infants between 2 to 6 months of age: 20 mg elemental Zinc once daily for 10-14 days
For children between 6 months to 5 years of age: 20 mg elemental Zinc once daily for 10-14 days

Precaution:

10 days (1 tablet each day) course of Zinc tablet prevent children’s from getting diarrhea in future; if the children recover from diarrhea before finishing the course, they still have to complete the 10 days course of Zinc.

Side effects:

Zinc may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and gastritis.
