New Chairperson of SMC

Mr. Muhammed Ali has recently been elected as Chairperson of the SMC Board of Directors in the 20th AGM of SMC held on May 4, 2013. Mr. Ali a former Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh, worked in various responsible positions in the public sector and also contributed efficiently in governing and policy making in many other organizations. His experience is also very rich in the health sector of the country.

Mr. Muhammed Ali was born in Narsingdi in 1939 to an aristocratic Muslim family. He obtained his Post Graduation in Public Administration with distinction from the University of Manchester, UK. He obtained B.A. (Hons) and M.A. (English) degree from the University of Dhaka in 1960 and 1961 respectively. He passed his Matriculation Examination in 1955 in first division and obtained Govt. scholarship. He secured 9th position in merit list in Intermediate of Arts with First Grade scholarship.

Mr. Ali started his career in 1961 as a Lecturer in English in Daulatpur College, Khulna and Chittagong Govt. College. Afterwards being qualified in the competitive examination for cadre service, he joined the erstwhile Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) in 1964 and served in various important positions in Pakistan and in Bangladesh from 1964 to 1998. He served in the position of Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ministry of Land, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Communication (Jamuna Bridge Division) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Govt. of Bangladesh. He was also the Chief Advisor and Head, Management Change Unit (MCU), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Bangladesh.

A former Chairman of Sonali Bank Ltd. and Janata Bank Ltd., Mr. Ali also served as a member of the Board of Directors of ICDDRB and as a member of Dhaka University Syndicate.

Mr. Ali has almost 50 years of long experience in various sectors of public service like: Administration, Management, Health, Communication, Education and Economy. He has visited 36 countries for study tours, training programs and attended many international conferences and seminars. He has been associated with SMC since 1998 and has always played a vital role as a Company Member, Board Member as well as Convener of Board Sub-Committees.
