Secoxim 500 tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Cefuroxime axetil USP equivalent to Cefuroxime 500 mg.

Pharmacology
Cefuroxime Axetil is a semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration. Cefuroxime Axetil is an orally active prodrug of Cefuroxime. After oral administration, Cefuroxime Axetil is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly hydrolyzed by nonspecific esterases in the intestinal mucosa and blood to release Cefuroxime into the blood stream. Conversion to Cefuroxime, the microbiologically active form, occurs rapidly. It is a bactericidal antibiotic and is stable to hydrolysis by many beta-lactamases. Cefuroxime kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall.

Indication
Cefuroxime is indicated for the treatment of
• Upper respiratory tract infections
• Lower respiratory tract infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Genito-urinary tract infections
• Gonorrhea
• Early Lyme disease & subsequent prevention of late Lyme disease

Contra-indication
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Warning & precaution
Cefuroxime should be given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics & who has history of colitis. Cephalosporin antibiotics may in general be given safely to patients who are hypersensitive to penicillin although cross reactions have reported. Cefuroxime has shown, that is not likely to be a problem at the recommended to dose levels.

Side effects
Adverse effects to Cefuroxime have occurred infrequently and have been generally mild and transient in nature. Effects reported include rashes and gastrointestinal disturbances. As with other antibiotics, prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of non susceptible organisms e.g. Candida.

Use in pregnancy & lactation
Cefuroxime Axetil can be safely used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections. Consideration should be given to discontinuing nursing temporarily during treatment with Cefuroxime.

Use in children & adolescents
The safety and effectiveness have been established from 3 months to 12 years for acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis based upon its approval in adults.

Drug interaction
No potentially hazardous interactions have been reported. In common with other antibiotics Cefuroxime may affect the gut flora. It reduces efficacy of combined oral contraceptives.

Overdose
Overdosage can cause convulsions or encephalopathy. Serum levels of cefuroxime can be reduced by hemodialysis.

Storage
Keep out of the reach of children. Keep below 300 C, protect from light.
